In this course, attendees will learn about the research production process—from designing a study, through IRB approval, data collection, write-up, peer review, and publication. Understanding this trajectory will be the first step in understanding the potential points at which bias can enter the equation, and what types of bias are most common in academia and why.
Then, we’ll move through some common types of cultural bias in today’s research, including race, class, and gender, among others, with explicit examples pulled from recent publications.
After this talk, learners will be more equipped for understanding how research can be applied to their clinical practice and lives, but how an eye for sources of bias within the scientific community and clinical consumers can help it be applied more appropriately and ethically.
