Length and Outcomes

Notes from Chris:
I wish that I could visit each one of your camps this summer -whether that was in person or virtually!  Unfortunately because of the space/time continuum that is not a reality SO I created this training so hopefully I can be with you at least a little bit while you are doing this incredibly important work!

Facilitator Preparation:
This training requires someone from your camp onsite to facilitate with the team. They will receive a facilitators guide and will use the materials from the course to do so. It is not fully asynchronous because we want to ensure that participants are connecting the content with your specific camp environment.
Facilitators should expect to spend time reviewing the course materials prior to the training.  Although all of the educational content is recorded, facilitators will want to make sure they are prepared to lead impactful conversations.

Mechanism of Training:
Allow for 2-3 hours to complete this course with your frontline camp staff.  Some staff may need more time to engage in the discussion questions and activities than others.  We recommend doing this training from the mid- to end of your training as you want folks to trust each other enough to discuss heavy, important topics.

Camp staff who complete this course during staff training should be able to do the following:

Use Affirming Language

Staff will receive in depth information regarding language practices that create safer environments for campers of all sexualities and genders.  Participants will have an opportunity to script out responses to common conversations.

Create Safe(r) Spaces

Staff will learn about best practices in changing and privacy, and disrupting binary expectations.  After learning together, staff will work to identify ways that they can make each area of their camp-scape more hospitable to campers of all sexualities and genders.

Address Identity Based Bullying

Staff will learn about possible behavioral indications that bullying based on gender or sexuality is occuring, how to empathetically work through the conflict, and how ensure the bullied camper feels cared for.
